Yossi Lapid at the Madrid Bookfair (June 2019)

Meet Sasha, my friend, and inspiration for my next series.

Yossi Lapid was born with a tooth in Transylvania, Romania. His family summoned an elderly Roma leader to interpret the meaning of this unusual event. “He will have many talents!” declared the wise Gypsy to the satisfaction of everyone present.

Yossi was born into a family of avid readers. Though his father had only three years of formal education, he spoke seven languages and had a vast knowledge of opera and classical literature. Yossi realized early on that this knowledge came from reading books. Ever since having this insight, Yossi has been passionate about reading and making up stories. Wonder-filled stories about all kinds of subjects: snowmen coming alive, magical trees offering shelter to lost travelers, and amazing dogs coming to the rescue of their beloved owners. Yossi grew up to earn a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University and had a long career as a professor of International Relations in Israel, Canada, and the United States. But upon retirement, he decided to devote himself full-time to realizing the dream he first had as a young boy in Transylvania: sharing his magical stories with the world.

In 2016, Yossi Lapid began publishing his award-winning Snowman Paul series. As of today, the series includes ten published volumes, and has won the following awards: the Silver Moonbeam Award (for Best Picture Book Series), the Mom’s Choice Gold Award, the Readers’ Favorite Gold Award, the Purple Dragonfly Gold Award, the Top Shelf Magazine Gold Award and the Literary Titan Gold Award.

In 2019, Yossi Lapid launched a new picture-book series titled Yara’s Rainforest. This timely and gorgeously illustrated series shows children how all living things on our beautiful planet depend on one another. Volume 1, titled Yara’s Tawari Tree, was published in July 2019. Volume 2, titled Yara’s Purring Monkey, will be published in late fall 2019. A third series inspired by his beloved puppy, Sasha, will be published next year.

Yossi Lapid has three children and lives with his wife Susan and his little dog Sasha in New Mexico.
